They were originally called "oily cakes."
The early Americans took the fact that the treats were fried in oil quite literally, naming them olykoeks, translating to "oily cakes." The word 'donut' came soon after when a woman is said to have put nuts in the dough before frying it.
Recipe:
Ingredients :
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tbsp sugar powder
1 tbsp of milk
1 tbsp of curd
1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder
1 tbsp of oil/butter
1/2 tsp of baking powder
1/4 tsp of baking soda
Pinch of salt.
If you need any flavour can add 1/2 tsp of vanila essence
Increase quantity according to measurements.
Method :
Take a bowl and add flour
Now add all ingredients one by one. First add sugar powder.
Now add baking powder, baking soda and pinch of salt
Add milk, yogurt and 1 tbsp of oil
Knead and make a dough. If your dough sticky,
Add some more flour and knead.
Dust some flour on your kitchen platform and knead the dough atleast 15-20 minutes softly.
Cover with damp cloth and leave rest it for 10-15 minutes.
In the meanwhile place a deep pan on gas and add oil for frying.
Now dust some more flour on platform and roll out the dough and cut the dough into donut shape. As picture.
Do deep fry in medium to slow flame until you get deep golden brown colour.
Take another bowl add some sugar powder and some cinnamon powder. Toss ypur fried donut in it.
Its ready now serve hot with tea.
